Newark Liberty International Airport will reopen one of its runways that was closed for construction and contributed to a host of problems the airport has faced in recent weeks.

Runway 4L-22R, one of Newark’s two main runways, was shut down on April 15 for a $121 million routine construction project and was scheduled to reopen on June 15. As of Monday, it is back open, 13 days ahead of schedule.

There has been a slew of problems at the airport in recent weeks, in addition to the runway closure, including two air traffic control outages between the radar and communications systems and staffing shortages. The air traffic controllers were unable to see or communicate with the planes around the airport for as long as 90 seconds on both April 28 and May 9.

After those incidents, multiple air traffic controllers took government-mandated leave due to trauma.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey worked with United Airlines, which operates a hub at the airport, and other airlines to reduce the volume of flights during the runway construction.

During the construction and other problems, just 28 flights per hour were taking off and landing at Newark. With this runway open again, Newark is expected to greenlight six more flights per hour. In normal times, 77 flights arrive and depart per hour.

The Federal Aviation Administration has reduced the flight schedule at Newark through October.

While the airport has two other runways, the main backup cannot be used during inclement weather. Air traffic controllers underutilized it during the problems.
