At least 10 people were arrested after angry New Yorkers took to the streets of Staten Island on Tuesday to block a busload of immigrants as they headed to a converted shelter.

The incident, which New York City Mayor Eric Adams called "ugly," occurred around 10:00 p.m. as the illegal immigrants were headed to the former Island Shores Senior Residences, according to a report.

Roughly 10 New Yorkers were arrested, and at least nine were issued a summons related to disorderly conduct, the report noted.

"You're not welcome!" the protesters chanted. "You are illegal!"

One person, identified as 48-year-old Vadim Belyakov, is facing charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

"We have 8.3 million New Yorkers, and we cannot allow the numerical minority that shows an ugly display of how we deal with crisis be used as an example of what New Yorkers are doing. Of course, New Yorkers are frustrated. New Yorkers are really concerned," Adams said following the incident.

"Even the migrants are really concerned," he added. "We are both stating that this crisis should be dealt with in a manner where the national government carries out the role that it is supposed to. It should not be left on the backs of New York City residents."

The mayor hears the sentiments and outrage his constituents feel toward the migrant crisis, he said.

"I understand the frustration that New Yorkers are going through and understand the frustration that asylum-seekers are experiencing as well," Adams said.
