The New York City Police Department's monthly crime data revealed an uptick in hate crimes against Jewish people.

In October, 69 of the 101 hate crimes reported were against Jewish people. This was a 214% increase from October 2022, when there were only 45 total hate crimes with 22 against Jews.

There were eight hate crimes reported against Muslim people, which was also an increase from last year, as there were none reported in the month of October. New York City's Muslim population is about 769,000, while the New York Metro area's Jewish population is roughly 1.3 million.

This comes days after Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) announced $50 million in grants to local law enforcement agencies to investigate hate crimes and another $25 million in grants for security funding for places that could be targeted, such as places of worship.

Police have also been on the alert for hate crimes across social media. It remains to be seen how many of the reported crimes were online.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, the 3,697 antisemitic incidents in 2022 were the highest number since the ADL began keeping data in 1979.
