


According to a new study, transgender surgeries were on the rise between 2016 to 2019 and then dipped during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Roughly 48,000 patients underwent gender-transitioning surgeries from 2016 to 2019. In 2019, the procedures peaked at about 13,000 before dropping in 2020, according to a study published Wednesday in the JAMA Network Open journal.

The researchers gathered their data by looking for patient records with the diagnosis code of “gender identity disorder” or “transsexualism.”
While still sometimes used in medical records, these terms have reportedly been considered "outdated or offensive."

Of those undergoing these surgeries, 52% were between the ages of 19 to 30 years old, while more than 21% were 31 to 40 years old.
Breast and chest procedures were twice as common as other transgender surgeries.
