NextImg:New nonbinary SNL castmember lectures audience on rights of transgender children

Comedian Molly Kearney, Saturday Night Live's first non-binary cast member, used the final moments of the "Weekend Update" segment to get serious about the wave of states enacting laws restricting transgender surgeries and puberty blockers for children.

“Since the start of this year, over 400 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced across the country, many of which directly target trans youth,” SNL's Weekend Update co-anchor Michael Che said. “Here to talk about it is someone with their own introduction.”

The sketch began with Kearney dropping via a harness from the ceiling into her guest seat next to Che as an announcer's voice said, "Introducing SNL’s first non-binary cast member."

“I’ve been wanting to come to Update and talk about trans people. But I have them for a much longer time than that wanted to fly down from the ceiling,” the cast member said.

"As of this week, there are now over 14 states that have passed bills restricting health care for trans kids," Che said to Kearney.

Kearney responded with a monologue about transgender rights.

“Restricting healthcare for kids. For some reason, there’s something about the word ‘trans’ that makes people forget the word ‘kids.’ If you don’t care about trans kids’ lives, it means you don’t care about fricking kids’ lives,” Kearney said as the audience applauded.

The comedian added, “People need to wake up. We are making trans kids grow up too fast. We should be keeping them safe, and we need to be lifting them up.”

As the sketch wrapped, Kearney was lifted by the harness back up into the air, but the SNL crew member had a parting lecture before closing the sketch.

“What’s happening, kids, is wrong, and you don’t need to be scared. Our job is to protect you, and your job is to focus on being a kid. It’s kind of like me flying in the SNL sky,” Kearney said. “There’s a bunch of dudes asking you about your crotch and where you’re allowed to pee. But if you just hang on, you’ll look up and realize you’re flying, kid.”
