A New Mexico police officer shot and killed a man after officers mistakenly arrived at the wrong home on Wednesday night.

An officer fatally shot and killed Robert Dotson, 52, after responding to a report of a domestic violence incident on the same block where Dotson lived — but entered his home instead of the reporting party's.

New Mexico State Police released a statement on the incident on Thursday, saying that officers from the Farmington Police Department "mistakenly approached 5305 Valley View Avenue instead of 5308 Valley View Avenue" when they entered the neighborhood around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Google Maps shows the homes being diagonal from each other across the street.

"Officers knocked on the front door of 5305 Valley View Avenue and announced themselves as Farmington police officers," state police said. "When there was no answer at 5305, officers asked their dispatch to call the reporting party back and have them come to the front door."

Body camera footage taken from the officers shows Dotson appearing at the front door with a handgun, state police said, prompting at least one officer to exchange gunfire.

"At this point in the encounter, officer(s) fired at least one round from their duty weapon(s) striking Mr. Dotson," state police said. "After the initial shooting, Mr. Dotson’s wife, also armed with a handgun, fired from the doorway of the residence. Once again, officer(s) fired. Once she realized that the individuals outside the residence were officers, she put the gun down and complied with the officer’s commands."

Dotson was pronounced dead at the scene, and his wife, uninjured, was not charged with a crime, police said.

Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe addressed the situation in a video statement on Thursday and expressed condolences for Dotson's family.

“I am just heartbroken. … Mr. Dotson was not the subject of this call,” Hebbe said in the statement posted on Facebook. “This ending is just unbelievably tragic. I’m extremely sorry that we’re in this position.”

State police said they would not identify the officers involved or specify what happened with the original domestic violence call. The video of the shooting is set to be released within a week, Hebbe said.

"There’s nothing I can say that will make this better," Hebbe said. "It’s a terrible event, and I’m heartbroken over it."
