NextImg:Netanyahu claims his UN speech carried on cellphones in Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday was broadcast on the cellphones of Palestinians in Gaza and on loudspeakers near the border.

“Thanks to special efforts by Israeli intelligence, my words are now also being carried — they’re streamed live to the cellphones of Gaza. So, to the remaining Hamas leaders and to the jailers of our hostages, I now say, ‘Lay down your arms,'” proclaimed Netanyahu, whose speech was boycotted by dozens of representatives.

Netanyahu’s claim would be another feather in the cap of Israel’s intelligence apparatus. Israel pulled off elaborate schemes targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon, in which they rigged both beepers and walkie-talkies used by the terrorists to explode.

In New York on Friday, in a message to Hamas, he said, “Let my people go free, the hostages, all of them, the whole 48 free the hostages now. If you do, you will live. If you don’t, Israel will hunt you down. Ladies and gentlemen, if Hamas agrees to our demands, the war could end right now.”

Netanyahu said the war could end if Hamas agrees to release all of the hostages, the demilitarization of the strip, and their removal from power.

“If Hamas agrees to our demands, the war could end right now. Gaza would be demilitarized. Israel would retain overriding security control, and a peaceful civilian authority would be established by Gazans and others committed to peace with Israel,” he said.

He also said his address, in which he appeared defiant toward the icy reception he received at the start of his speech, is being relayed through “massive loudspeakers connected to this microphone in the hope that our dear hostages will hear my message.”

Hamas continues to hold 48 Israeli hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Several countries announced their unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state during the General Assembly.

The United States, Qatar, and Egypt have acted as negotiators throughout Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, though they have been unable to get both Israel and Hamas to agree on a long-term solution for how Gaza is governed and rebuilt after the conflict ends.
