Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked X owner Elon Musk to "roll back" antisemitism on the platform after the billionaire attacked a Jewish watchdog group for allegedly hurting profits.

Netanyahu appeared alongside Musk on a livestream on X, formerly known as Twitter, where the two initially began discussing artificial intelligence. The conversation eventually shifted over to reports of Musk expressing antisemitism. The accusations arose after Musk threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League over claims that it had taken actions to harm the platform by pushing advertisers away.

"I know your commitment to free speech and I know you’re opposed to antisemitism," Netanyahu told Musk. "I hope you find within the confines of the First Amendment a way to try to roll it back. … I encourage you to find the balance. It’s a tough one."

"Obviously, I'm against antisemitism," Musk said. "Free speech does mean, at times, someone is saying something you don't like. That doesn't mean negativity should be pushed on people. Our overarching goal is to maximize unregretted user time. We can't police [antisemitism] ahead of time. We're not going to promote hate speech."

“I’m anti really anything ... that promotes hate and conflict. And I’m in favor of that which helps society and takes us to a better future for humanity collectively," Musk said.

"That shouldn't stop you from coming out in every forum, as I do, and condemning antisemitism," Netanyahu added.

Netanyahu is scheduled to attend the U.N. General Assembly but added a stop to Musk's Tesla factory in California as a sudden addition to his schedule. He will return to New York for the assembly late Monday evening.

Musk sparked tensions when he tweeted on Sept. 4 that the ADL, a prominent left-leaning Jewish advocacy group, tried to "kill" the platform with false claims of antisemitism. He posted several tweets afterward claiming that the organization caused a 60% drop in advertising revenue and stating his intent to sue the organization.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino reached out to ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt to try to rebuild trust despite Musk's tweets, according to the Washington Post.

Musk previously turned his ire toward the ADL after it and other advocacy groups alleged a surge of hate speech on the platform after he bought the company.

The ADL said that it hopes Netanyahu and Musk have a "productive" conversation on how to fight hate speech, according to Bloomberg.

Netanyahu's visit was protested by hundreds, according to Musk. The Israeli minister has taken several steps to weaken Israel's judiciary, a move that has earned him the ire of many around the world.
