A Navy sailor has been disciplined after reportedly attempting to access President Joe Biden’s restricted medical record in an electronic health record system.
The person responsible for the breach is a junior enlisted sailor serving in the Navy’s hospital corps, an official familiar with the situation said.
“On February 26, 2024, Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Fort Belvoir was notified of an unauthorized access to medical records by an active-duty service member,” Navy Cmdr. Tim Hawkins said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.
“A Sailor assigned to NMRTC Fort Belvoir searched the name ‘Joseph Biden’ in MHS Genesis, the Military Health System’s electronic health record, out of curiosity. A co-worker reported the Sailor’s breach of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) opened an investigation, which concluded on April 24, 2024,” Hawkins added.
The official told CBS News that the person did not manage to pull up Biden’s record and “did not pull up the right Joe Biden.”
“The MHS Genesis system is a secure health system and at no time was the President’s personal information compromised,” Hawkins said.
The sailor’s admitted motivation was that the search for the president’s name was done “out of curiosity.”
The president’s physical was just two days after the incident and “was previously planned.” The physical found “no new concerns” and deemed the president “fit for duty.”
“The president was informed within hours of White House staff being notified by the Department of Defense,” a White House official said.
The news comes as Biden faces a flood of calls for him to step down after a stumbling presidential debate performance in which he showed incoherent, unorganized thinking at points that seemed indicative of his age, 81.

Congressional Democrats have now largely coalesced to support Biden, but polls have shown that the president has a steep hill to climb to catch former President Donald Trump in the presidential race.
The Washington Examiner contacted the White House and the Department of Defense but did not receive responses.
