Romania's defense minister said on Wednesday that scattered remains of what is believed to be a Russian drone used in an attack on the Ukrainian port of Izmail have been discovered in his country.

“I confirm that in this area, pieces that may be of a drone were found,” Defense Minister Angel Tilvar said.

Drone debris landing in Romania, a member of the NATO military alliance, would be "a serious violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Romania," President Klaus Iohannis added.

As part of NATO, Romania is covered by the alliance's commitment to collective security. Russian military activity within its borders could force the United States and its allies into a direct military confrontation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Iohannis said he requested an "urgent and professional investigation" into how pieces of the Russian drone ended up on Romanian territory and that if the investigation finds the remains are from Russia's yearlong war with Ukraine, it would be "completely unacceptable."

"We are on alert and in constant contact with our NATO allies,” he added from an international summit in Bucharest.

NATO spokesman Dylan White said Romania informed NATO about the incident and that NATO allies "expressed strong solidarity with Romania."

"Since last year, in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, NATO has significantly increased its presence in the Black Sea region," he said. "We continue to monitor the situation closely, and we remain in close contact with our ally Romania.”

Romania's confirmation comes two days after Ukraine claimed Russian drones had detonated on the NATO member's land on what is likely an area of the Danube that forms a natural border between Romania and Ukraine. At the time, Romania “categorically denied” claims.

Russia's increased attacks on Ukrainian ports are part of a plan to sever one of the last shipping lifelines left for the war-torn Eastern European country following the July collapse of a deal that allowed Kyiv to export millions of tons of grain through the Black Sea.
