Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) claimed that President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard gives the president “something to talk about” amid disagreement over the Big Beautiful Bill Act and his massive legislative agenda in Congress.

Schiff is among the growing number of Democratic lawmakers criticizing Trump’s response to the riots in Los Angeles, in which Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has vocalized his opposition to the president. The senator claimed that Trump’s “deliberate provocation” is stoking the feud between protesters and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“But the president doesn’t care about making it worse; he’s more than happy to see violent protests,” Schiff told reporters on Monday. “It gives him something to talk about, something other than his big, ugly bill that’s going to blow a hole in the deficit and take away people’s healthcare. So for him, this is a wonderful distraction, but for the people who live here, this is anything but.”

When asked about the violence in Los Angeles, Schiff said “it needs to stop” and that violence against police “has no place” in the city. He added that he has contacted Newsom’s office and is “more than willing” to offer what he can to “help maintain the calm.”

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SECURITY AT ARMY’S 250TH CELEBRATION IN DC

Schiff has also criticized Trump and the upcoming parade celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Army in Washington, D.C., claiming he is “horrified” by it. He added that the “military vanity show” will be “a celebration of the president and his power.”

The parade will start at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and conclude on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Entry will begin at 2:00 p.m., the parade will start at 6:30 p.m., and conclude with fireworks at 9:45 p.m.
