Suspended Michigan State University football coach Mel Tucker blasted his employer in a statement that said the school was conducting a biased investigation into sexual harassment claims against him.

In a statement released late Monday, Tucker said that Michigan State's investigation into a sexual harassment claim made by sexual assault awareness activist Brenda Tracy "has not been fair or unbiased" and that the school likely had an "ulterior motive" in its treatment of him that could be traced back to racism, sexism, or to the school's response to convicted rapist and former MSU doctor Larry Nassar.

"The investigation has not been fair or unbiased," Tucker, who is black, said. "I can only conclude that there is an ulterior motive designed to terminate my contract based on some factor such as a desire to avoid Nasser taint, or my race and gender."

Tracy, who said she was gangraped by football players in 1998 and has since made a career of speaking publicly on the issue of sexual assault, accused Tucker of sexual misconduct during a phone call the pair had in April 2022. Tucker has denied any wrongdoing and said the encounter was entirely consensual. Michigan State responded to the allegation by suspending the head coach indefinitely.

In his statement, Tucker said that Tracy's attorney had attempted to force him to pay the activist in order to keep the allegation quiet.

"Ms. Tracy's attorney told us from the very beginning that I should not lose my job over her allegations, but that it would take a lot of money to make it go away," Tucker said. "Her twisting of our personal relationship months after it concluded is designed to revive her career and destroy my life, precipitated by her greed."

The school is set to hold a hearing on the harassment claim from Oct. 5-6, but Tucker said he has no faith that the hearing will exonerate him.

"The 'sham' hearing ... is ridiculously flawed and not designed to arrive at the truth," he said. "Neither Ms. Tracy nor any of her witnesses will be required to testify under oath or penalty of perjury ... we cannot present or offer any substantive evidence of innocence and ... there is no opening statement, closing argument or any opportunity to explain our case."

Michigan State did not respond to a request for comment.
