NASCAR driver Noah Gragson has requested to be released from his racing club after the team indefinitely suspended him for his Instagram activity.
Gragson, 25, was suspended by Legacy Motor Club earlier this month after liking a meme on social media that mocked George Floyd, a black man killed by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020. In asking for his release with Legacy Motor Club, Gragson stated it is so that he can "take time to work through the NASCAR reinstatement process," according to a statement released Thursday.

"I love racing, and I am looking forward to a second chance to compete for wins at the highest level of NASCAR — and most importantly, make my family, my team and the fans proud of me once again," the statement read.

Gragson was set to be replaced by Josh Berry, 32, in the upcoming races for the team. Other members of the team include Jimmie Jones, driving no. 84, and Erik Jones driving No. 43; Berry will be driving Gragson's No. 42.
In the wake of indefinitely suspending Gragson, Legacy Motor Club cited his actions that “do not represent the values of our team” as the reason for the suspension. The club's CEO, Cal Wells III, stated he was proud of Gragson for taking "ownership of his actions."
"Noah has a ton of talent and has a great personality," said Wells. "This is a difficult situation, but we are proud that Noah has taken ownership of his actions and are confident he will work through this process with NASCAR and come back stronger."

Shortly after being suspended by his racing club, Gragson issued an apology for liking the meme.
I am disappointed in myself for my lack of attention and actions on social media.

I understand the severity of this situation.
I love and appreciate everyone.
I try to treat everyone equally no matter who they are. I messed up plain and simple. https://t.co/PCX6iMJxRF
