Two weeks ago, NBC personalities threw a tantrum over the network hiring a milquetoast Republican to be on their “sacred airwaves.” On Tuesday, those sacred airwaves were handed over to a convicted felon.
The tantrum from NBC and MSNBC “talent” over the hiring of former Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel stemmed from the distaste they had over having to include McDaniel in their shows. As MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace said, MSNBC’s airwaves are “sacred.” Former Democratic operative turned MSNBC host Jen Psaki said she was good to be on the network because she is completely honest and unselfish, while former Republican operatives are not.
Enter Michael Avenatti, the former MSNBC darling who was convicted of extortion in 2020 and defrauding his clients in 2022. Avenatti returned to the network’s “sacred airwaves” in an interview with host Ari Melber, for some reason. Avenatti gave the interview via phone from federal prison, because apparently it was necessary for him to provide his expertise in being a convicted felon to discussions about former President Donald Trump’s legal problems.
Aside from some light tax fraud and extortion, Avenatti also led a witch hunt against then-judge Brett Kavanaugh with an absurdly false story that Kavanaugh was leading gang rape rings. Who could be more honest and trustworthy and deserving of time on MSNBC’s “sacred airwaves” than that?
There will be no networkwide outrage over this as there was over the horrifying possibility that MSNBC hosts would have to interview a Republican. Giving any oxygen to Avenatti is far more damaging to the network’s journalistic integrity than hiring a Republican, let alone putting that Republican on the air on a regular occasion. Avenatti is a swindler and convicted felon. He is worse in every way than Ronna McDaniel, a former GOP operative with a penchant for losing.

Then again, this would be worse for NBC’s journalistic integrity if only it had any. NBC and MSNBC are flush with former Democratic operatives, former intelligence operatives who agree with Democrats, and former GOP operatives turned Democratic mouthpieces. Avenatti, despite being a convicted felon and known swindler, pushes Democratic narratives. It is why the network loved him before his convictions, and why Melber inexplicably decided to bring him back on those oh-so-sacred MSNBC airwaves.
There will be no tantrum or handwringing over this, as there was over having any association with McDaniel. MSNBC is a network run by Democrats, for Democrats, and there is no reason for Republicans to pretend otherwise when it is this blatant.
