The mother of an EMT who was stabbed while treating a man in the back of a New York City ambulance said she is afraid the man will be set free without any real consequences.

"Democrat policies in New York, including bail reform, protect criminals and allow them to be released with 'minimal consequences,'" Cara Fatum-Grant said, according to a report.

Fatum-Grant's daughter, 25-year-old Julia Fatum, was stabbed on July 19 while she was treating 48-year-old Rudy Garcia as the pair made their way to Mount Sinai West.

After Fatum asked Garcia, a purported felon with two prior felony convictions and three prior misdemeanor charges, to stop after he tossed a gum wrapper at her, he used a knife from his boot to allegedly stab her six times, the report noted.

Garcia is facing second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault charges and pleaded not guilty Monday, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office.

Currently, he is in custody at Rikers Island in lieu of $500,000 bail, and it is unconfirmed if he was on the street due to the state's bail reform laws following a July 10 arrest.

"We expected him to plead not guilty, and we expect they will ask for some kind of plea bargain — we are worried that our daughter's struggle with be for nothing," Fatum-Grant said. "People are literally getting away with murder in this state and change needs to be made."

The EMT's mother has vocally opposed New York's bail reform laws and is worried that Garcia is set to be "released and face minimal consequences for what he's done."

"I feel like New York is failing its citizens," Fatum-Grant said. "We've become a 'protect the criminal' type of state."

"Knowing how dangerous this man is and how many times he was caught and released really scares me."

Fatum, herself, is "strong and determined," according to her mother.

"Julia has not and will not be able to return to work anytime soon," Fatum-Grant said. "She still does not have function in her left hand and arm and has quite some trouble walking."

Still, her recovery has been slow, and Fatum has a "long road ahead," Fatum-Grant said.
