More than half of Americans support the legality of medication abortion in their state, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey.

The survey, conducted before recent court rulings on the abortion drug mifepristone, found that 53% of those surveyed said medication abortion should be legal in their state. Only 22% said it should be illegal, and 24% said they weren't sure.

WHITE HOUSE 'READY TO FIGHT' TEXAS ABORTION PILL RULING

The battle over abortion ratcheted up to new levels after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last June.

On Friday, a federal court ruling in Texas blocked the Food and Drug Administration's approval of mifepristone, and a Washington state court ruling blocked the FDA from pulling the drug from the market.

Some Democratic lawmakers, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and even Republicans, such as Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), suggested the FDA should ignore the Texas court ruling.

"What do we say to women suffering miscarriages who won't be able to get an FDA-approved doctor-prescribed drug to medically assist? Good luck we hope you don't get sepsis? This isn't how to win hearts and minds or suburban moms," Mace tweeted on Monday in response to criticism.

The Biden administration has vowed to fight back against the Texas ruling.

Among Republicans and GOP-leaning Americans, the Pew Research survey showed only 35% said medication abortion should be legal in their state compared to 73% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters.

Two-thirds of younger Americans, those under 30, said abortion pills should be legal. The majority of white (54%), black (58%), and Asian Americans (59%) said abortion pills should be legal. But only 46% of Hispanic Americans said the same.

An overwhelming majority of women under 30, 71%, and men under 30, 60%, said medication abortion should be legal. A slight majority of women 30 and up, 51%, said medication abortion should be legal in their state.

The poll was conducted from March 27 to April 2 and has a plus or minus 1.7 percentage point margin of error.
