NextImg:More than half of adults say Trump broke the law in Georgia: Poll

A majority of adults believe former President Donald Trump violated the law in Georgia by allegedly attempting to interfere in the 2020 election, but a majority do not believe he violated the law in the other investigations against him.

The new poll from the Associated Press and NORC shows a majority of adults do not believe Trump violated the law with his handling of classified documents, alleged hush money payment to two women, or with his alleged role in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

POST-INDICTMENT TRUMP SURGE SHOWS SIGNS OF COOLING, POLL SAYS

Of those surveyed, 53% said Trump's alleged actions in Georgia were illegal, while for allegations regarding the Capitol riot (49%), handling of classified documents (47%), and hush money payments in New York (41%), only a plurality said his actions were illegal.

Despite a majority of adults not saying they believe Trump did anything illegal regarding hush money payments to two women, most (57%) believe the indictment against him in Manhattan was justified. An overwhelming majority (90%) of Democrats say it was justified, whereas a majority of Republicans (74%) and independents (56%) believe it was not justified.

Most did say the indictment against Trump was politically motivated (57%), including a majority of independents (60%) and Republicans (86%).

Trump pleaded not guilty to the 34 criminal counts against him in the Manhattan courthouse last month. The indictment came after an investigation into hush money payments made to two women in 2016 ahead of the presidential election.

The former president is still being investigated by a grand jury in Georgia for his alleged interference in the 2020 election in the Peach State, along with an investigation by special counsel Jack Smith for Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents and involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

The majority of those surveyed also said they would not like to see Trump run for president again (70%), but 55% of Republicans said they do want him to run for another term.

The poll was conducted from April 13-17 with 1,230 adults from across the country and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9%.

Trump is currently the front-runner in the Republican primary, with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) firmly in second place behind the former president. Other 2024 GOP contenders, including former Govs. Nikki Haley (R-SC) and Asa Hutchinson (R-AR), are far behind the other two.
