Puerto Rico is experiencing an island-wide power outage that has left more than 1 million people without electricity on New Year’s Eve.
The island’s power outage began around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, and energy officials said it could take up to two days to restore full power. As of 10:40 a.m. Eastern, according to the energy company LUMA, 1,289,749 are without power, and 12.16% of customers have service.
LUMA posted on X that it is working with other generation partners, such as Genera, to restore power. It added that the cause of the power outage is still being investigated, but it is likely due to a failure of an underground line.
“LUMA crews responded immediately and have begun their process to restore power to customers as quickly and safely as possible,” according to the company.
“LUMA will restore power to customers in phases,” it continued. “We have already begun the process of restoring some customers, and the full process will take between 24-48 hours, conditions permitting. LUMA will provide regular updates on the restoration via its social media channels every two hours.”
Puerto Rico has experienced several power outages this year due to a crumbling electric grid. These outages have become more frequent during the summer months, leading Puerto Ricans to protest.

Gov. Pedro Pierluisi said on Facebook that his team is working with Luma and Genera to solve the island-wide power outage.
“We are demanding answers and solutions from both LUMA and Genera, who have to expedite the restart of the generating units outside the fault area and keep the people duly informed about the measures they are taking to restore service throughout the Island,” Pierluisi said.
