Unless something drastic happens in the next 18 hours, the federal government will shut down at midnight. It is impossible to tell how the shutdown will end, especially since the Republican Party in both the House and Senate seem to be completely divided on what they want.
Even when Republicans can agree on one issue to prioritize, such as immigration, there is no consensus on what would be desirable. I wouldn’t always trust Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) for insight into congressional Republicans, but his analysis here seems spot on.
MORE AMNESTIES WILL ONLY MAKE BORDER CRISIS WORSE
“There’s not a consensus position among Republicans as to what immigration changes they want,” Murphy said. “Some want funding. Some want policy. Some want big policy. Some want small policy. It’s very hard to work out all of those differences and the differences with Democrats between now and Saturday.”
As to whether or not more funding is the solution to the crisis at the southern border, I’ll quote Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) from earlier this week:
“Folks, you look at the number of people who have died at the border because Joe Biden has made it more and more enticing to come here,” Britt said. “Make no mistake. This is a result of failed policies. We could fix this. We can’t throw money at this and fix it. We have to actually change the policies.”
Britt is 100% correct. Throwing money at the Biden border crisis won’t fix anything. Democrats will only use that money to pay off the mayors of New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., who are all complaining that the flood of immigrants coming to their communities thanks to Biden’s catch-and-release policies are bankrupting their governments.
Democrats want more money thrown at the border crisis because that is how they are able to avoid changing policy. Another bailout of Democratic governments providing food, shelter, education, and healthcare to immigrants will only make it easier for Biden to continue his failed immigration policies.

If Republicans don’t have the leverage to force Biden to make the policy changes necessary to end the border crisis, such as reinstating "Remain in Mexico," then at a bare minimum, Republicans should insist that not a single dime of any money from any continuing resolution should be spent to help alleviate the pain the Biden border crisis is causing.
No money for the border crisis is infinitely better than another Biden border crisis bailout.
