Montana has become the latest state in which pornography behemoth Pornhub is banning itself from access, just ahead of the state enacting an age verification law.

In May, Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) signed a bill that changed statutes related to what is considered harmful material for children and requires websites that host a substantial amount of adult content to set up age verification procedures.

The measure received overwhelming bipartisan support, passing the state Senate 47-3 and the House 84-13, and is set to go into effect Monday.

"While safety and compliance are at the forefront of our mission, giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution for protecting our users, and in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk," a Pornhub spokesperson said in a statement.

The law states Pornhub and other companies would need to set up a system to accept a government ID or "any commercially reasonable method that relies on public or private transactional data to verify the age of the person attempting to access the information is at least 18 years of age or older."

Montana is one of multiple states that have enacted age verification laws, prompting Pornhub to block access.

A Utah lawsuit filed by Free Speech Coalition, a pornography industry trade association, was thrown out by United States District Judge Ted Stewart in August, but it is on appeal in the 10th Circuit.
