NextImg:Moment of silence held for Jimmy Carter at Falcons-Commanders game - Washington Examiner

Just before the start of a key game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Washington Commanders as both look to secure one of the final playoff spots left in the NFC, a moment of silence was held for former President Jimmy Carter who died earlier Sunday at age 100.

The PA announcer for the game announced that it was in “honor” of the 39th president of the United States, and a 10-second moment of silence was held.

Carter, who was from Plains, Georgia, was a passionate sports fan, frequently rooting for the Atlanta-based teams including the Falcons and the Braves. Both teams mourned his death in statements posted to X.

While the Commanders are not physically located in Washington, D.C., the team represents the district while they play their home games at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

A return to Washington could be coming, however, after a bill to transfer land ownership of RFK Stadium to the city was given a second life in the Senate following its eventual omission from the continuing resolution Congress passed in December to fund the government.

Memorial services for Carter, including the state funeral in Washington, D.C., are likely to take place this week.
