St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright gave fans a preview of his future in music Thursday, singing the national anthem ahead of the team’s home opener at Busch Stadium.

Wainwright could be seen coming into his own in a video posted by the team Thursday. He appeared to be a little out of place in the first few seconds of his performance, but he quickly found his somewhat country rhythm and received raucous applause.

Wainwright expressed hopes to start a country music career when he retires from baseball after the 2023 season, and his version of the anthem fit the bill of a country singer’s anthem. He was flanked by acoustic guitars for the performance.

Wainwright held a concert in Springfield, Illinois, in January, playing to about 500 fans, according to MLB.com.

The pitcher exuded joy as he finished the song, and he was rewarded by the crowd’s eruption.

Wainwright did not play in the game, and his team lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 10-9.

Wainwright went into his last season with 195 career wins, according to MLB.com.
