MLB owners unanimously approved the Oakland Athletics' petition to move the team from the aging Oakland Coliseum in California to a new stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The move, which was approved on Thursday, would not occur until 2028 at the earliest because the new stadium would need to be built. But the team's contract with Oakland is expected to close at the end of the 2024 season. It is not clear where they would play during the gap.

"There was an effort for more than a decade to find a stadium solution in Oakland," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said on Thursday, according to ESPN. "It was [A's owner] John Fisher's preference. It was my preference. ... It didn't happen."
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said he was disappointed in the decision to take the team out of Oakland but that nothing has been set in stone.
"We do not see this as the end of the road. We all know there is a long way to go before shovels in the ground and that there are a number of unresolved issues surrounding this move," Thao said in a statement. "I have also made it clear to the Commissioner that the A's branding and name should stay in Oakland and we will continue to work to pursue expansion opportunities. Baseball has a home in Oakland even if the A's ownership relocates."
Although the move was approved by MLB leadership, plenty of questions remain about the team's future. For example, it is not clear how the team would adjust to the summer's blistering heat safely because a sketch of the plans did not include a dome or retractable roof.
The stadium is also expected to be smaller than other stadiums, sitting on a 9-acre parcel of land that had housed the Tropicana Hotel. It will also only seat 33,000 people at a time, whereas other stadiums typically hold 35,000 attendees.

The possible move has been met with some resistance from fans. Some fans have shouted for the team's owner to sell the team so that it remains in Oakland. If the team does leave its California home, it would be the second Oakland sports team to move to the Silver State. The NFL's Oakland Raiders moved to Las Vegas in 2020.
The move would mark the second relocation of an MLB team in the past 50 years. The other team was the Montreal Expos, which relocated to Washington, D.C., in 2005.
