A Missouri high school is facing criticism after it named a transgender student as homecoming queen for the second time in five years.
The teenage student, a biological male who identifies as a transgender woman, defeated four biological females when Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri, elected its homecoming queen, according to a report.

"Being nominated and then becoming queen is so much deeper than just surface level," the student said in a post to social media, the report noted. "I have had a very difficult high school journey, but having the support of my friends, family and Oak Park has helped tremendously, I truly don’t know where I would be without it."

"Tonight I stood on a field with four other amazing women, who are just as deserving of this honor as I am. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience with these women."
North Kansas City Schools congratulated the student.
"Congratulations to @Northmen_OPHS Homecoming Queen Tristan Young!" NKC Schools said.
The decision to crown a transgender person as homecoming queen was met with both support and criticism across social media.
"I want to pause and congratulate Tristan for being crowned Oak Park High School’s Homecoming Queen!" Justice Horn, an LGBT activist and the leader of the LGBTQ Commission of Kansas City, said.

I uplift this against the transphobic comments against this young person who was named queen by their peers. I’m thankful the next generation of Kansas City is so kind. ???? https://t.co/MDpsuQJ14T

Former NCAA swimmer-turned-activist Riley Gaines offered a different view on the transgender student's crowing.
"So stunning & brave," Gaines posted to X.

Another reminder to all girls that men make the best women. I wonder if a female will win homecoming king or if it's understood that both of these spots are reserved for males. Who's to blame here? pic.twitter.com/ZXHU6Wyiiy

"Who else is getting tired of these boys stealing the glory from girls simply because they dress up and pretend to be girls and the schools are doing this on purpose?" another user asked.
Who else is getting tired of these boys stealing the glory from girls simply because they dress up and pretend to be girls and the schools are doing this on purpose? If this boy was still a boy, do you think he'd win Homecoming King? Probably not. https://t.co/Fgw2Nu1dSH

"The fact that @NKCSchools immediately locked down comments is telling," another user commented, referring to the NKC Schools' congratulatory post.
"They know this is nonsense pandering to the mentally ill. And the want everyone to play along."
