The submersible was heading to the wreckage site, which is located in the North Atlantic Ocean about 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Since the RMS Titanic, which sank during its maiden voyage in 1912, was discovered at the bottom of the ocean in 1985, scientists and tourists have explored the site of the maritime tragedy. More than 1,500 people died in the April 1912 sinking of the Titanic, which was caused by damage sustained after a collision with an iceberg.
The U.S. Coast Guard said on Monday that the submersible went missing after it lost contact "approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into the vessel's dive."
