Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman, who was shot alongside his wife in a politically motivated shooting last month, was released from the hospital Monday.

Hoffman moved out of a hospital intensive care unit and into a rehabilitation facility. His wife, Yvette Hoffman, was released five days after she was treated for injuries following the June 14 attack.

A family spokesperson said Hoffman “still has a long road to recovery ahead.”

The couple said that around 2:00 a.m., their family woke up to someone who identified himself as a police officer pounding on the door of their home in Champlin, Minnesota. Hoffman was shot nine times at his home, and his wife was shot eight times. Their daughter, Hope, secured the lock and called 911.

“Her brave actions and quick thinking triggered the notice to public safety officials that a politically motivated act was potentially underway,” Hoffman’s statement said.

The suspect, Vance Boelter, was charged with stalking and shooting Hoffman and his wife, as well as stalking and killing Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman.

The U.S. attorney for Minnesota, Joe Thompson, called the attacks “targeted political assassinations.”
