Royce White, a Republican Senate candidate in Minnesota, mistook a map of drinking fountains in Minneapolis for a map of crime in a post on X.
He posted a picture of what was described as a map of crime in Minneapolis, but upon further evaluation, it turned out to be a map of drinking fountains in the city. White, a former NBA player, won the endorsement of the Republican Party of Minnesota last month in the race to unseat Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).
“Crime in Minneapolis… Out of control,” White posted on X. “Come on now. Refund the police! #Godspeed.”
The map, in fact, depicted 195 drinking fountains across the city. He later updated the post with a map that accurately depicted crime spots in the city without acknowledging the error. The new map shows where shootings have occurred in the last week in Minneapolis.
White has embraced a number of right-wing conspiracy theories and has previously described himself as an “antisemite” and “Blackface, Extremist, Cis-Male, Sexist, Misogynist, Homophobic, Transphobic,” on his Twitter profile. He is also entangled with some financial controversies including facing jail time for unpaid child support and misusing campaign funds.

White faces a tough race to unseat Klobuchar, who is popular in Minnesota. In 2018, she received 60.3% of the vote. The Cook Political Report labeled the race as “Solid D,” which is the strongest rating possible for Democrats.
The Washington Examiner reached out to White’s campaign for comment.
