Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) will reportedly meet with donors in New York next week to test the waters on a long-shot primary challenge to President Joe Biden, according to multiple news reports published Friday.
Phillips, who has been approached about a potential bid for the White House, according to Politico, has previously discouraged the president from running for reelection in 2024 because of his age. However, Biden announced his candidacy earlier this year, and he is the front-runner for the party's nomination.

The Minnesota Democrat also joined a team of lawmakers who urged older leaders in the party to step down last year so a younger generation could lead the House. Following the 2022 midterm elections, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was replaced as the party's leader by now-House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
Although Phillips, who is the co-chairman of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, discouraged Biden from running, Phillips's own views and votes have been similar to the president's. Phillips has voted in favor of Biden’s infrastructure bill, the Chips and Science Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, and a major gun reform law, according to NBC News. Phillips is considered a centrist within the Democratic Party.

If Phillips does announce a bid for the White House, he would be the third challenger for the Democratic nomination, joining Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the son of former United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968.
