House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is the latest Republican leader trying to save his job against a conservative coup.

But he’s got one thing going for him that his recent predecessors didn’t. The public, especially Republicans, generally likes him.

Backed by former President Donald Trump, the Louisiana Republican has a 44% favorable rating. In the latest Rasmussen Reports survey shared with Secrets, his approval rating has improved from 39% in February. Some 32% have an unfavorable view of him.

And 87% said that Johnson is better or about the same as past speakers, including 89% of Republicans.

On a partisan level, he also is in a good position. Said the poll analysis, “Johnson is viewed favorably by 52% of Republicans and 40% of both Democrats and voters not affiliated with either major party.”

Because he pushed through a foreign aid bill that included billions of dollars for Ukraine, some conservatives led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) are trying to oust him. But that effort is in trouble of being pushed back by Democrats.

Ron Bonjean, a former spokesman for a former Republican House speaker and Republican Senate majority leader, noted the unusualness of Johnson’s good polls, especially when the public is down on President Joe Biden.

“A Republican speaker has this type of growing popularity, which is even stronger than Biden’s favorability, is rather unheard of in today’s fractured society,” Bonjean, a co-founder of Washington’s ROKK Solutions, a bipartisan communications firm, said.

“He has even more room to move since a good chunk of Americans haven’t made up their minds about him. Trying to force Johnson out may be having an opposite effect with voters even if it helps with MTG’s fundraising,” he added of Greene’s moves.

It is likely that Trump’s support has also helped Johnson weather the conservative storm over foreign aid funding.
