House Speaker Mike Johnson endorsed President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize because of the president’s crime crackdown in Washington.

Trump deployed the National Guard, federalized the Metropolitan Police Department, and ordered several federal agencies to police the District of Columbia in recent weeks.

“There are MANY reasons why President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize – but 11 straight days with ZERO murders in Washington, D.C. might top the list,” Johnson wrote on X.

“SAFER streets. STRONGER communities. AMERICA IS BACK!” he concluded.

Since Trump’s crime crackdown began on Aug. 12, violent crime has decreased by 53% year-to-date, and property crime has dipped by 18%, according to MPD records reviewed by the Washington Examiner. Robberies decreased the most from 85 committed in the same period in 2024 to 26 in 2025, a 70% drop.

Johnson said the district has not had a murder in 11 straight days. According to preliminary data from the MPD, the speaker’s claim appears to be correct. The last homicide took place on Aug. 13.

The president will have control of the MPD until at least next month, when he will have to relinquish it back to the local government, barring a new move. The length of the National Guard’s stay is unclear, as some soldiers recently started carrying weapons.

While Johnson did endorse Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, he did not nominate him. Reps. Andy Ogles (R-TN) and Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) sent a letter to the Nobel committee earlier this month nominating Trump for the prestigious prize. The pair nominated Trump for his role as a “peacemaker.”

Trump reportedly wants the prize but has publicly said he does not believe he will receive it. The president’s odds could be long to win the prize, the Washington Post reported.

He has touted his role in peace between Iran and Israel, Armenia and Azerbaijan, India and Pakistan, and several other conflicts as reasons he should win the award.
