Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) declined a possible opportunity to chair the Homeland Security Committee following the upcoming resignation of Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), the outgoing chairman.
Green, who approached McCaul about filling the vacancy, announced on June 9 that he will resign “as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package.”

“It was never my idea,” McCaul told the Washington Examiner after it was initially reported by Bloomberg Government. “I was approached by Mark Green, and we talked to the speaker about being a placeholder for the remainder to avoid a contentious steering race.”
Four people want to run for the chairmanship, and he does not have a preference for who should succeed Green, he said.
The Texas lawmaker served as the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee from 2013-2019, and more recently was the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He still serves on both of those committees.

Green announced his resignation from Congress earlier this month after getting “offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up.”
During his time as chairman, Green oversaw the committee’s successful effort to impeach former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, though the Senate dismissed the articles.
