NextImg:Mexico needs history lesson on the Berlin Wall

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador famously does not respect President Joe Biden, so Biden is probably not the best man for the job, but someone needs to teach Mexico about the history of the Berlin Wall.

This past weekend, Tijuana Mayor Montserrat Caballero and former Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard installed a 3-ton slab of concrete from the Berlin Wall on the border with the United States with a plaque that reads, "May this be a lesson to build a society that knocks down walls and builds bridges."

JUST SAY NO TO BAILING OUT BIDEN'S BORDER CRISIS

“Why in Tijuana?” Caballero asked rhetorically at the plaque’s unveiling. “How many families have shed blood, labor and their lives to get past the wall?”

The short answer to Caballero’s question is millions. Over seven million immigrants have been arrested trying to cross the southern border illegally since Biden became president alone.

But the longer answer is that Caballero has her history all wrong. The Berlin Wall was not built by the United States to keep the communist subjects of East Germany out of West Berlin. It was built by the Soviet Union to keep its own citizens from escaping to the West.

In short, the Berlin Wall was built to keep people from escaping the Soviet Union, not for keeping people out of the West.

The U.S. has every right to control who does and does not cross its borders, just as Mexico has every right to control its borders. Over 700 miles of the 1,954 U.S.-Mexico border already has a wall, and even Biden is still adding to it to fill some gaps in Arizona.

The border wall is not the silver bullet for illegal immigration that many people claim it would be, but it is highly effective in favorable geographic regions, and it definitely aids the Border Patrol in its efforts to keep the border safe.

What the U.S. really needs to end the current border crisis is an end to Biden’s catch-and-release border policies, which could be accomplished by reviving President Donald Trump’s "Remain in Mexico" program.

Bringing back "Remain in Mexico" wouldn’t solve every problem on the border, but it would solve 90% of the problem, and unlike the rest of the wall, which would take decades to build, reinstating "Remain in Mexico" could be done overnight.
