A barrage of complaints that Instagram and Facebook users were automatically following President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance prompted a response from its parent company, Meta.
As former President Joe Biden left office, his followers stayed tuned into the POTUS handle. So, when Trump entered office, he assumed the same social media handle, and all of Biden’s followers became his. The allegations that Meta was forcing these followers to automatically follow the new president, vice president, and first lady were false, according to Meta spokesperson Andy Stone.
“Those accounts are managed by the White House so with a new administration, the content on those Pages changes,” Stone explained. “This is the same procedure we followed during the last presidential transition. It may take some time for follow and unfollow requests to go through as these accounts change hands.”
Today, Biden’s posts he made while under the POTUS handle are archived and “maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration” according to the account. Biden’s last post included a photo of himself, former first lady Jill Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and former second gentleman Doug Emhoff with the caption, “it has been the honor of our lifetimes to serve you, the American people.”

Already followers have begun to shift. On Biden’s last day, he had over 18 million followers on Instagram, but by Thursday, Trump’s version of the account had around 16.9 million followers. The follower count on Facebook remained roughly the same. A similar shift happened to Harris’s Instagram account, which had 16.9 million followers compared to Vance’s 15.9 million.
This comes as TikTok remains banned from U.S. app stores per the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. Now, Instagram is the first result when searching TikTok. However, those users who kept the app on their phones prior to Sunday still have access to the platform.
