Actor Mel Gibson called for the ousting of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) in a plea to his neighbors.
It has been over a week since President Donald Trump began deploying National Guard troops to assist in ending the riots despite the Democratic politicians’ claims that the protests are peaceful. In total, 4,000 members remain there. Trump also sent a group of 700 Marines to the area. Gibson spoke on the situation Sunday on the Arroyo Grande Show.

“Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass have already proven their incompetence and poor leadership during the Los Angeles wildfires,” Gibson said in a statement. “Now, as we experience rampant lawlessness and civil unrest, it’s never been more clear: they’re unable to respond effectively and responsibly during calamity. Whether it’s sheer incompetence or outright malevolence the reality is stark. California is in a state of turmoil.”
The reference was to the Eaton fire that began at the start of this year and was active for 24 days as it burned over 14,000 acres, damaged over 9,400 structures, and resulted in 17 deaths. Some 10,000 residents were displaced as they evacuated the fire’s path of destruction.
Meanwhile, Bass was in Ghana for the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama. White House officials asked her to go to represent then-President Joe Biden, and it was meant to be a “very very short trip over a weekend and two business days,” according to the mayor.
“And I ask my fellow Angelenos, why are Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass still in office?” Gibson said. “How much more of their destructive decision-making masquerading as leadership are we going to tolerate? It is time to take back our community and our state, and put the power and the privilege in the hands of competent leaders whose goals are to protect us and the way of life this nation was founded upon and promises to offer.”

The actor stands out in a sea of criticisms from liberal celebrities, including Shakira, Olivia Rodrigo, Green Day, and more, who joined in the chorus of protests against Trump over the weekend. They did not address the unrest in Los Angeles but criticized the ICE raids instead.
Newsom is a year away from reaching his two-term limit after he survived a recall election in 2021. Following the fires in Southern California, Newsom was served recall papers for the second time. Bass plans to run again in 2026 and also avoided a recall after the fires.
