Soccer star Megan Rapinoe confirmed to reporters following Saturday's game that she believes she tore her Achilles tendon.
Rapinoe, 38, went down in a no-contact attempt to press a Gotham FC defender after slipping on the grass. As she sat on the ground she immediately reached out for her ankle. This injury occurred less than six minutes into the match between Gotham FC and Rapinoes OL Reign.
SOCIAL SECURITY UPDATE: SECOND ROUND OF DIRECT PAYMENTS WORTH UP TO $4,555 ARRIVES IN FOUR DAYS
"This is a tough one. Definitely not how I envisioned this last one going. I'm pretty sure I tore my Achilles," Rapinoe said in San Diego's Snapdragon Stadium after the game had ended while wearing a boot on her right foot. Her team would go on to lose to Gotham 2-1. "So proud of the group, obviously. They put everything out there. So deserving to Gotham. They've had such a great year."
The National Women's Soccer League Championship was Rapinoe's final professional game since she announced her retirement in July. At the match, Ali Krieger was representing Gotham for her final match as well. The poorly-timed injury aroused sympathy online.
"Heartbreaking. This game can be cruel," the Girls Soccer Network wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Thank you, thank you, thank you, Megan Rapinoe."
