Former U.S. Women's National Team soccer player Megan Rapinoe decried playing for the Stars and Stripes as the "worst job in the world" due to the significant criticism she garnered.

Rapinoe attributes the high pressure of the team to why the job can be undesirable in the Netflix documentary series Under Pressure: The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team.

"I always say it's the worst job in the world because if you do your job, then you were supposed to, and if you do one hair less, then you are gonna get lambasted for it," Rapinoe said.

The soccer star, who retired from the sport earlier this year, also said she saw her 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup as "very special" despite the United States losing in the round of 16 after winning the previous two world cups.

"I think it's just such a different feeling knowing that this is going to be my last World Cup, being kind of an old head and having a different role on the team," Rapinoe said in the series. "It means a lot to me in a lot of different ways than the other ones did. Yeah, this one's very special."

Rapinoe was one of the key players for the U.S. women's soccer team's success through the mid to late 2010s. Her outspoken nature on various social and political issues throughout her time on the team caused the ire of many during her career.

She played her final professional soccer match in November, but she tore her Achilles tendon six minutes into the game.
