The median wealth for Americans under 40 has reached an all-time high.

New research from the Department of the Treasury, published on Wednesday, found that the median wealth of Americans between the ages of 25 and 39 had increased to $80,500 in 2022, a massive increase from $23,750 in 2010. Data over time showed a plummet in median income after the 2008 financial crisis, which remained stagnant until 2020 and its aftermath. From 2019 to 2022, the median net worth of young Americans more than doubled.

Not all signs were good, however, with the report stating that several changes have contributed to an increasing sense of economic fragility among young adults, despite their increase in net worth.

“Young male labor force participation has dropped significantly over the past thirty years, and young male earnings have stagnated, particularly for workers with less education,” it read. “The relative prices of housing and childcare have risen. Average student debt per person has risen sharply, weighing down household balance sheets and contributing to a delay in household formation.”

“The health of young adults has deteriorated, as seen in increases in social isolation, obesity, and death rates,” it continued. “The outlook for the future is also more uncertain, with young Americans facing the mounting costs of climate change and deficit spending, both of which have built over the past few decades.”

The data found trouble for young Americans in the lower education bracket, with wages stagnating. Housing has also deteriorated, with median house prices doubling between 1990 and 2022.

The report recommended expanding the housing supply, providing affordable childcare, expanding healthcare insurance, and investing in trade schools and apprenticeships as ways to improve the financial well-being of young adults.
