


House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is slated to meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in California instead of Taipei in an effort to avoid acts of aggression from China, the Financial Times reported on Monday.
The California Republican, who has been vocal in his support for Taiwan’s independence, vowed to visit the island prior to obtaining the speaker’s gavel.
“We shared some intelligence about what the Chinese Communist Party is recently up to and the kinds of threats they pose,” a Taiwanese official told the Financial Times.

Tsai is expected to visit New York and California during her scheduled visit in April, in which she is slated to give a speech at the Reagan library.
Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) visited Taiwan, which sparked Beijing to launch joint military exercises in the region.
