House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) began questioning a reporter on Thursday following a question on his recent direction for the House to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden over his family's business dealings and his possible involvement.

McCarthy directed the House to open the impeachment inquiry into Biden on Tuesday, following increased pressure from House Republicans ahead of a spending fight and possible government shutdown. "These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives," he said.

"What an impeachment inquiry is to do is to get answers to questions," McCarthy told Associated Press reporter Farnoush Amiri on Thursday after being prompted.

"Are you concerned about all this stuff that was just recently learned? Do you have any concern? Have you asked the White House any questions?" he asked. Amiri indicated she had inquired the White House.

"Do you believe the president lied to the American public when he said he'd never talked to his son about his business dealings?" the House speaker continued. "Yes or no?"

"I can't answer that," she replied.

"Do you believe when they said the president went on conference calls? Do you believe that happened?" McCarthy further prompted Amiri.

"That's what the testimony says," she answered.

"Do you believe the president went to Cafe Milano and had dinner with the clients of Hunter Biden, who believes he got those clients because he was selling the brand? Do you believe Hunter Biden — when you saw the video of him driving the Porsche — that he got $143,000 to buy that Porsche the next day? Do you believe that $3 million from the Russian oligarch that was transferred to the shell companies that the Bidens controlled after the dinner from Cafe Milano took place?" McCarthy asked another series of questions.

He asked Amiri again if she believed Joe Biden had lied, to which she replied, "But is lying an impeachable offense?"

McCarthy responded, "All I'm saying is I would like to know [the] answer [to] these questions. The American public would like to know."

The exchange between McCarthy and Amiri comes two days after the White House sent editorial leaders of media organizations a memo urging them to treat the impeachment inquiry, which it said was "based on lies," with increased scrutiny.
