Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will testify that the Biden administration's border policies are "working" and are having a positive impact on illegal immigration during his appearance on Capitol Hill later Wednesday morning.
An advanced copy of Mayorkas's 24-page opening statement before the House Judiciary Committee indicates he will stand firm on the work the Biden administration has done overhauling the immigration system to the extent possible absent congressional action, but it may not be enough to quell Republicans' intent on impeaching him.

"Within the confines of that broken system, our department’s approach is working," according to his prepared testimony obtained by the Washington Examiner. "Under President Biden’s leadership, we have led the largest expansion of lawful, safe, and orderly pathways for people to come to the United States in decades, and we have, at the same time, imposed tougher consequences on those who choose not to use those pathways — consequences that have resulted in the return, removal, and expulsion of more than 665,000 people in the first half of this fiscal year."
Republicans plan to demand answers about the number of illegal immigrants his administration has allowed to be released into the U.S. since January 2021, how to stop fentanyl from slipping over the border, and the fallout from abandoning Trump administration policies.
House Judiciary Republicans have high expectations of Mayorkas heading into the hearing, according to senior aides who spoke with the Washington Examiner on Tuesday.
“[Wednesday's] hearing will focus on, among other things, getting answers to two big questions: 1. How many illegal aliens has the Biden administration released into the United States? 2. Of that number, how many have the Biden administration removed from the United States?" the source wrote in a text message. "If Secretary Mayorkas cannot answer those two questions, it will be a big problem.”

Mayorkas's appearance is especially significant given the investigation the House Homeland Security Committee launched earlier this summer to determine if Mayorkas was derelict of duty over how he has handled the highest illegal immigration encounters in U.S. history.
However, it is the House Judiciary Committee that has the authority to move forward on impeachment, making what Republicans learn Wednesday even more consequential for Mayorkas, who has hired legal representation to help navigate the GOP's investigation.
