Embattled Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas returns to Capitol Hill on Wednesday amid a congressional investigation over his handling of the border and certain House Republicans threatening impeachment.
He'll appear before the House Judiciary Committee's oversight hearing to examine the Department of Homeland Security's operational failures, the unprecedented border crisis, and the abandonment of immigration enforcement under Mayorkas, according to the hearing announcement.

House Republicans warned on the eve of the hearing that Mayorkas should come "prepared" to give clear answers and data on the state of the border.
Judiciary Republicans will focus on addressing two issues during the hearing, according to a source familiar with the agenda.
“[Wednesday's] hearing will focus on, among other things, getting answers to two big questions: 1. How many illegal aliens has the Biden administration released into the United States? 2. Of that number, how many have the Biden administration removed from the United States?" the source wrote in a text message. "If Secretary Mayorkas cannot answer those two questions, it will be a big problem.”
Mayorkas's appearance is especially significant given the investigation that the House Homeland Security Committee launched earlier this summer to determine if Mayorkas was derelict of duty over how he has handled the highest-ever illegal immigration encounters in U.S. history.
However, it is House Judiciary Committee that has the authority to formally move forward on impeachment, making what Republicans learn Wednesday even more consequential for Mayorkas, who has hired legal representation to help navigate the GOP's investigation.
The House Judiciary Committee has held a slew of border-related hearings since retaking the majority in January, but this is its first oversight hearing of the 260,000-employee department.
Judiciary member Darrell Issa (R-CA) said all eyes will be on how Mayorkas handles questions this time around.
“Secretary Mayorkas has a chance to change course from past hearings: He can tell the truth about the controlled border he found and the worst-ever crisis he delivered. And he can admit the truth about the unprecedented deadly fentanyl and human trafficking that ... passed through the borders he opened wide and kept that way," Issa wrote in a statement to the Washington Examiner. "Or he can continue to be the point man of the Biden border fiasco and lie to the Congress and the country.”
Despite the committee's intense focus on Mayorkas, House Democrats are unfazed by the GOP's actions.

“While it’s almost fun watching Republicans go down rabbit holes holding hearings to impeach the Secretary, they still haven’t shown anything of substance," a senior Democratic aide said. "The American people don’t want this, it’s an open secret now this is being pushed by right-wing groups.”
A House Judiciary Democratic spokesman did not return a request for comment.
