Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) disagreed with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-GA) call for a "national divorce" between red and blue states, but did say the rebel Georgia congresswoman is "helping to inspire a national renewal," which he believes is the necessary course for the country.
"I do think the federal government should at least have to spend the night on the couch for a while," Gaetz said on the Fox News Channel's Ingraham Angle on Wednesday.
MTG CALLS FOR 'NATIONAL DIVORCE' BETWEEN RED AND BLUE STATES
Greene faced major pushback on Presidents Day when she tweeted, "We need a national divorce. From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrats' traitorous America Last politics, we are done." The congresswoman first suggested the idea in 2021.
Just two days later, she defended her comment, saying she wasn't calling for a civil war but is concerned that's where the country is headed. "In my life and my world, all of my friends are regular Americans; everyone I talked to is sick and tired of being bullied by the Left and disrespected by the Left," she said.
"... the last thing I ever want to see in America is a civil war. No one wants that. At least everyone that I know would never want that. It's going that direction, we have to do something about it," Greene added.
Despite making clear his opposition to the "national divorce" idea, Gaetz was not critical of Greene, instead complimenting his peer several times during the interview. "I think Marjorie Taylor Greene is making an invigorated argument for federalism, which I think a lot of voters would ascribe to," the Florida congressman said.
Ingraham: But none of this is aided by a national divorce. That doesn’t solve any of these problems and it’s now an argument the Democrats are going to use against us..

Gaetz then echoed a sentiment Greene has not been shy to exclaim, saying he doesn't think Democrats trying to "divide" the nation is helpful.
