NextImg:Massive 'March for Israel' event draws bipartisan lawmakers and support

Tens of thousands of activists are expected to descend on the nation's capital Tuesday afternoon in a show of display for Israel in its war against Hamas, the terrorist group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7 leading to more than 1,400 people killed.

Supporters include a bipartisan group of congressional lawmakers who are set to address the crowd during the "March for Israel" rally organized by the Jewish Federations of North America. The rally also aims to make a large stand against antisemitism and call for the freedom of the nearly 200 hostages taken by Hamas.

OBAMA ADVISER DAVID AXELROD SLAMS BIDEN'S SLOW CAMPAIGN: 'GET OUT OR GET GOING'

“On October 7th, merciless Hamas terrorists launched the deadliest attack on Israel in its 75-year history, brutally murdering the most Jewish people in a single day since the Holocaust,” said Eric D. Fingerhut, president and CEO of the Jewish Federations of North America, in a statement. “Israel must eliminate the terrorist threat on its border and restore safety and security to its people. Americans have rightly stood by Israel at this critical moment because Americans understand that Israel’s fight against Hamas is no different than America’s fight against Al Qaeda and ISIS."

The speakers at the Tuesday demonstration on the National Mall include Israeli President Isaac Herzog, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), actress Debra Messing, and political commentator Van Jones. The event is set to run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Given the heightened tensions over the war and the rising tide of antisemitism in the U.S., lawmakers have called on law enforcement to help manage the event. Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser requested the National Guard coordinate with local police for the rally as up to 60,000 people could attend the event. While Washington, D.C., police said there were no credible threats toward the event, they have also enforced road closures and parking restrictions around the city.

The "March for Israel" rally comes amid debates over calls for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas. A poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed deep division among Democrats over the war, with 50% of Democrats approving of how Biden has navigated the conflict and 46% disapproving. An NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist national poll from last month showed 65% of people said the U.S. should support Israel publicly, and 53% think U.S. support for Israel makes the Middle East safer.

While Democrats have faced calls from progressive members to push for a ceasefire in response to a growing Palestinian humanitarian crisis, most Republicans are more unequivocal in their support for Israel.

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley released an op-ed in the New York Post this week denouncing antisemitism on college campuses and rejecting calls for a ceasefire.

"Students and citizens of free countries have loudly called for Israel’s obliteration, declaring that its attempts to defeat a terrorist enemy are acts of 'oppression' and 'colonialism,'" Haley wrote. "This is blatant antisemitism, but it’s also more: It’s an outright assault on the bedrock principles of Western civilization."

"There can be no ceasefire. Letting terrorists go guarantees they’ll perpetrate another Oct. 7 — or worse," Haley continued.

Since the war began, there have been several demonstrations in the U.S. and around the world criticizing Israel's military actions against Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip. Yet Biden has been adamant about his pro-Israel stance, even traveling to the beleaguered nation after the Hamas attack and requesting $14.3 billion in aid to Israel, which the House passed earlier this month while ignoring the total $106 billion foreign aid package the president originally requested.

Earlier this month, more than 300,000 people attended the "National March on Washington: Free Palestine," a pro-Palestinian rally in Washington, D.C., organized by the ANSWER Coalition. The event started in Freedom Plaza near the White House and was one of the largest demonstrations in support of Gaza in U.S. history.
