Maryland Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks has reached into her electoral toolkit and pulled out her most intriguing endorsements with Rep. David Trone (D-MD) threatening her chances in the state’s Democratic primary.
In a new ad, Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD), and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), two of the state’s heaviest hitters in the Democratic Party, shoveled praise on Alsobrooks as Trone leads in the polls. Five of the state’s seven Democratic representatives appeared as well.
The video emphasizes a growing local endorsement gap between Trone and Alsobrooks — with the former only garnering the support of Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) among other smaller-scale Maryland politicians.
Maryland politicians could be shying away from Trone because of a racial slur he used in a House Budget Committee hearing in March. Trone said his use of the slur was accidental.
Trone has sought to make up ground with a tremendous fundraising advantage, most of which is coming from his own pockets, over Alsobrooks as both candidates square up to face former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan.
Hogan has proven he can flip the largely Democratic state red before, and that has caused Democrats to rally political spending in Maryland. Democrats’ spending may be valid, as Hogan leads in head-to-head polls against both Trone and Alsobrooks.

Trone and Alsobrooks recently faced off in a televised debate, after which both candidates confidently proclaimed that they had the better showing.
Trone performed about 5 points better than Alsobrooks in the poll against Hogan, though both still trail by double digits as Republicans look to win a Maryland Senate seat for the first time since 1987 in the wake of Sen. Ben Cardin’s (D-MD) retirement.
