Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said she "hadn't thought about" running for the Senate in the week since former President Donald Trump suggested she do so in 2026.

Greene, a staunch Trump ally, represents a deep-red district in northern Georgia with few Democratic constituents to worry about appealing to. If she were to challenge Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) when he's up for reelection in 2026, the controversial congresswoman would need to find ways to reach the moderate voters who backed the state's Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) in 2022 while rejecting GOP Senate candidate Herschel Walker due to his string of controversies. Trump urged Greene to run at a rally last weekend.

“I haven’t talked with him about it, but it was so nice of him to say that at the rally!” Greene told NBC News when asked about Trump's proposition.

Asked if she'd ever consider a Senate run, the House lawmaker replied, "I have no idea. Yeah, I hadn’t thought about it."

“Marjorie Taylor Greene, you happen to be here. Would you like to run for the Senate?" Trump asked at his Texas rally on Saturday. "I will fight like hell for you, I tell you."

Senators who were asked about her potential candidacy questioned if Greene had the ability to surpass the 50% threshold necessary to avoid a runoff by state law.

“I think if you put her name on the ballot as a Senate candidate, she would have a hard time getting to 50%," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who campaigned for the 2020 and 2022 GOP candidates defeated by Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), told the outlet.

“I would prefer a new model in Georgia,” he said with a laugh. “I’d prefer Kemp run. He’d be my No. 1 choice.”

Walker also flashed a smile when discussing Trump's boost of Greene's potential candidacy, telling the outlet, "He has a history of picking Senate candidates in Georgia. See how that went the last time.”

Ossoff, on the other hand, was terse when asked about the prospect of facing Greene in 2026, saying, "Anyone’s free to run. I’ll be ready."

Greene has seen her star rise in the Republican Party since being elected to Congress in 2021. At the time, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) orchestrated Greene’s banishment from all committees over her past embrace of conspiracy theories. This included antisemitic comments, accusations the Parkland shooting was a false flag, and remarks propagating the QAnon conspiracy theory.

She went on to align herself with House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and helped him in his efforts to retake the majority in the 2022 midterm elections and in his prolonged speakership race. McCarthy rewarded Greene with positions on two influential panels: the House Oversight and Accountability and Homeland Security committees.

Her name is now frequently mentioned as someone who could be a 2024 running mate for Trump.

Greene has continued to fashion herself as an aggressive political firebrand despite her newfound prominence, which could pose a challenge if she ran in a statewide contest due to Georgia's recent trend going from blue to purple.
