Widespread violent crime has been a recurring issue for most in the country during President Joe Biden’s term. Images of rampant muggings, assaults, and shootings have dominated the news cycle since Jan. 20, 2021. Numerous cities have set records for homicides in a year since Biden was elected. In many ways, it should come as no surprise that a large number of voters in the country believe crime is still a problem, even if reports have suggested crime rates have started to decrease.

A recent poll suggested that a plurality of the country believes crime continues to soar in their areas. According to a new survey from Rasmussen, “41% of American Adults say crime has increased in their community over the past year.” Comparatively, only 14% felt that crime has started to trend downward, while about 38% thought “crime has stayed about the same over the past year.”
Additionally, NBC News found that 77% of people believe crime rates are worsening, according to a recent Gallup poll. However, those sentiments don’t appear to match the data that showed crime has started decreasing in the country instead of increasing. Data and information from the FBI found that violent crime dropped 8% in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same time in 2022. Additionally, property crime reportedly fell 6.3% to “its lowest level since 1961.”

However, whether crime rates are falling or rising, everyone should be against the radical criminal justice reform policies that have contributed to the country’s wave of violent crime. Never forget the left-wing, Soros-funded district attorneys who implemented horrible laws and discretionary practices that adhered to a social justice agenda rather than reality, leaving thousands of innocent people as crime victims or dead.
Politics aside, decreasing crime is undoubtedly good news for everyone in the country. Everyone should hope for crime levels to fall even more and remain low, but objectively, 8% is a good start. It means fewer innocent people are being victimized and harmed by criminals. However, if most of the country doesn’t believe this is true, it could spell bad news for President Joe Biden in the election. In politics, like many things in life, perception is indeed reality, primarily for voters in this era of political tribalism.
