The search for a Pennsylvania prisoner who escaped last week and whom police describe as a "self-taught survivalist" is underway after investigators located campsites they believe are connected to the man.

Michael Burham, 34, escaped from jail in Warren, Pennsylvania, by using bed sheets to exit through the window. Burham was being held on $1 million bail related to burglary, kidnapping, and other charges. He is a suspect in a homicide investigation, according to police.

Michael Burham, 34, escaped from jail in Warren Pennsylvania over the weekend.

Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police said during a news conference over the weekend that Burham is a "self-taught survivalist with military experience and could be potentially holed up in a wooded area near the city."

"We are considering him armed and dangerous, and we are cautioning residents if they see him or believe that he may be anywhere near them that they should not attempt to approach him,” Bivens said.

Bivens said police discovered small campsites in the wooded areas within the radius of the manhunt. The jail from which Burham escaped is located about 18 miles from Jamestown, New York, and just outside the Allegheny National Forest.

Police do not believe Burham has left the general area. He is believed to have prepared to hide out in the woods because small campsites and stockpiles were located in the forest near the jail.

Burham is the prime suspect in the murder of Kala Hodgkin, 34, and is also associated with the kidnapping and carjacking of a local couple while fleeing capture from authorities. Federal, state, and local authorities are involved in the search for the missing inmate.

The Pennsylvania State Police has assumed control as the search expands through the county and into the state of New York. The U.S. Marshals Service is offering up to $7,500 for information leading to Burham’s arrest, and Warren County Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $2,000 reward.
