Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) furthered speculation he could run for president next year in his latest comments since shockingly announcing he was retiring from the Senate on Thursday.

Manchin, who has collaborated with No Labels, a centrist political organization working to find a third-party candidate for president, wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that extremes in both the Left and Right control the Democratic and Republican parties. He went on to claim leaders are failing to pass legislation that the majority of the public supports.

“This moment in the nation’s history is so filled with peril and political dysfunction that I want to work not only for my beloved West Virginia but for all Americans,” Manchin said. “Working together, I want to eliminate what is standing in the way of so many obvious and popular solutions. While the Democratic and Republican parties increasingly cater to the extremes, most Americans are moderate, levelheaded folks, and they are plain worn out.”

“I will finish my term while traveling the country and speaking out to see if there is interest in building a movement to mobilize the middle, find common ground and bring Americans together."

No Labels praised Manchin’s leadership in the Senate following the announcement of his retirement. No Labels said it is working to determine what type of leader people want in the White House, adding it will make a decision on a third-party ticket by early 2024.

“Regarding our No Labels Unity presidential ticket, we are gathering input from our members across the country to understand the kind of leaders they would like to see in the White House. As we have said from the beginning, we will make a decision by early 2024 about whether we will nominate a Unity presidential ticket and who will be on it,” a press release reads.

No Labels is currently getting on the ballot in a dozen states, creating concern for Democrats by threatening a bipartisan presidential ticket in 2024.

The organization has received pushback from Democrats and anti-Trump allies, criticizing the group for a unity presidential ticket, claiming the bid could help deliver former President Donald Trump back to the White House.

Both Manchin and No Labels share the sentiment that an independent run for president is needed to solve the nation’s most pressing problems.
