Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced on Thursday that a bipartisan amendment to block the Biden administration's crackdown on gas stoves was adapted into a 2024 appropriations bill during a markup of the legislation.
Manchin commended the addition of the amendment to the fiscal 2024 Financial Services and General Government funding bill, saying it was "past time for Washington bureaucrats to stop overreaching." The amendment uses similar language to legislation Manchin introduced with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in February called the Gas Stoves Protection and Freedom Act.

“It’s past time for Washington bureaucrats to stop overreaching and telling American families how to cook their dinner,” Manchin said in a press release. “As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I am proud to have secured this bipartisan amendment to prevent the Consumer Product Safety Commission from issuing any rule banning gas stoves and am committed to stopping the Biden Administration from extending their radical climate agenda to our kitchens.”
Manchin introduced the bipartisan Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act in February, working with Cruz to block a federal agency from banning the use of gas stoves.
The legislation would effectively prevent the Consumer Product Safety Commission from using federal dollars to regulate an existing or new gas stove by labeling it as a “banned hazardous product.”
While the CPSC has not yet taken any recommendations to block or scale back the sale of gas stoves, reports have circulated that the agency is considering taking steps toward bans due to health concerns behind the appliances.
“There is no doubt that at the behest of radical activists, the Biden administration is waging a multi-pronged attack on natural gas and popular appliances,” Cruz said in the press release. “While there is still much more work to be done in this fight, this is a victory against burdensome regulations from drunk-on-power bureaucrats at the CPSC who put the interests of Green New Deal absolutists ahead of consumers.”
The Department of Energy proposed an “energy efficient standard” for all gas appliances aimed at moving manufacturers toward more stringent efficiency requirements. The Office of Energy Efficiency released requirements for new cooktops, outlining they cannot use more than 1,204 kBTU in gas energy per year.

In May, Manchin pledged to block all incoming Environmental Protection Agency nominees from President Joe Biden in an effort to urge the environmental agency to “halt their government overreach.”
Manchin included the amendment in the Financial Services and General Government fiscal 2024 appropriations bill, which be voted on by the full Senate later this year, determining if Manchin’s gas stove amendment will be enacted.
