Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and his daughter Heather Manchin are working on a $100 million project to boost centrist policies and candidates, according to a new report.
Heather Manchin, a former Fortune 500 CEO, told the Wall Street Journal she registered a politically active nonprofit organization, called Americans Together, in July and plans to hire staff soon. She clarified the group is not linked to her father’s political future, which remains unclear.

The West Virginia Democrat has still not announced whether he will be running for reelection in 2024 in a ruby-red state President Joe Biden lost by 40 points last cycle and has openly flirted with a third-party run for president in 2024. Earlier this summer, he said he was considering changing his party affiliation from Democrat to independent.
“What we both very much agree on is the system is very broken and actually in deep trouble,” Heather Manchin told the Wall Street Journal. “We have been thinking about what can be done to bring people together.”
The project is not associated with No Labels, the centrist group seeking ballot space for alternatives to Biden and former President Donald Trump, if they both become the party’s nominees.
Manchin has been in no hurry to announce his plans for 2024, keeping the political world guessing for the foreseeable future.
“The brand has become so bad — the D brand and R brand. In West Virginia, the D brand because it’s [the] national brand. It’s not the Democrats in West Virginia, it’s the Democrats in Washington,” Manchin explained. “You’ve heard me say a million times I’m not a Washington Democrat.”
A poll by the East Carolina University Center for Survey Research in May showed Manchin losing to Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) by 22 points in a potential Senate match-up. Justice first must face off against Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) in the GOP primary race.

According to a memo, the Manchins' project seeks to "mobilize the middle," "change the national narrative," and "garner support for those willing to prioritize policy and country over party and politics."
